In 2008 models came equipped with standard front and rear head side curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags. These models were given an Acceptable overall rating in side impacts. Models without side airbags were given an overall Poor rating.

The interior of the Aura also marks a new interior direction for Saturn, moving to a more European-style interior. The design of the interior of the Aura differs from that of the Ion, which was highly criticized. On the upscale XR model, the interior comes with an option for saddle leather and paddle shifters, as well as an option for back seat radio controls.


Despite being praised for its design and fit and finish, the Aura's interior has been criticized for using cheap materials.

The car has taken most of its styling from the new Opel Insignia, with many of the higher options fitted as standard. Full production came on line at Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port Plant at the end of September 2009 .

Shanghai GM launches the Chinese specification of Opel Astra, which is badged as Buick Excelle XT. This car goes on sale in January, 2010. Three engines has been announced: Ecotec D-VVT 1.6L, 1.8L and 1.6T.
